Final function of Kalahandi Ghumra Utsav will start from Jan 14

The final function of the mega annual cultural event of Kalahandi – Kalahandi Utsav Ghumura- 2010 organised by Zilla Sanskruti Parishad – is scheduled to be held from January 14th to 17th.

Folk dance troupes from across the country will showcase their talent in the festival. Different sports events, crafts and handloom mela will be organised to mark the occasion.

Yesterday, a boating competition was organised in the Indravati reservoir near Mahulpatna.  

Thousands of people had gathered to encourage the boatmen. Team of Jitendra Jhadia and Sibasankar Jhadia of Digreebandh village won the race while Trinath Majhi and Kandul Majhi of Khamnaguda village were adjudged the runners up.  

An archery competition was also organised among the tribal participants at the banks of Indravati reservoir. Sanyasi Majhi of Lakhpada won the competition while Isku Majhi of Gabadapadar and Balaramsingh Majhi of Badchatrang won the second and thirs positions respectively.

Colourful Kalahandi Utsav Ghumura-2010 starts

The Kalahandi Utsav Ghumura-2010 got off to a colourful start here today. The event was inaugurated by MP Bhakta Charan Das.

Torches from Shaiva Peetha Belkhandi, Martyrs’ land Urladani, Budharaja temple of Ampani, sand from Manikeswari temples of Bhawanipatna and Thuamul-Rampur were brought in a procession to the venue.

From today, various events will be organised as part of the Ghumura Utsav across the district and the final function will be organised from January 14 to 17 at Bhawanipatna.

The day also saw celebration of the Kalahandi Foundation Day. A seminar on the topic – Kalahandi: Past, Present and Future – was organised at the Town hall here. The Kalahandi princely state was merged with Orissa on November 1, 1948 and on the same day in 1949, it got separate district status.

To commemorate this day, Kalahandi Foundation Day is observed every year by the Kalahandi Sanskruti Parishad.
