Proposed Vedanta Science College, Lanjigarh to start its academic session from 2011

Today the management committee of upcoming Vedanta Science College organized a day long conference on “Emergence of Science Education” in the society at Lanjigarh.
As 21st century every human life is more dependent on technology the knowledge on scientific innovations is becoming essential for all of us . “Science education would not only help in getting employment but also will help us to enhance a quality life in science oriented society’, said Prof. Arun Kumar Pujari, Vice-Chancellor, Sambalpur University during a conference. More than 200 students and faculty members from 15 colleges in Kalahandi and Rayagada participated in this conference.
The objective of the conference was to make the people conscious about the value of science education at degree level as well as to discuss about the proposed Vedanta Science College at Lanjigarh. Dr. Mukesh Kumar, President and COO, Vedanta Aluminium Limited, said, “Vedanta Science College was a long pending demand of the people of Western Orissa. Vedanta is committed to create a state of art Science College that will promote quality science education in western Orissa”. Quality Science education can help in developing technical manpower for industrialization in Orissa, he added.
The proposed Vedanta Science College will start its academic session from 2011 and will provide education in subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Mathematics, Zoology, and Environmental Science. As the local students of the region depend on Bhawanipatna, Rayagada and Bhubaneswar for degree level studies on science subjects, Vedanta Science College can make a valuable contribution to the local people around Lanjigarh,

Orissa has urged NALCO and SAIL to set up medical colleges

Bhubaneswar, Jan. 7: The Orissa government has urged the central public sector undertakings (PSUs) operating in the state to help it set up medical colleges in the state.
Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik today reviewed the progress of various proposed medical colleges in the state.
At present, the state has six medical colleges. The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Mahanadi Coal Field Limited (MCL) have agreed to set up two medical colleges.
MCL has agreed to set up a medical college at Talcher. NTPC too has agreed in principle to the proposal. It is yet to decide the location of the new college.
The state government has also approached Nalco and SAIL to help develop the state in this regard.
Investment to the tune of Rs 150 crore is needed for a medical college with a capacity to enrol 100 students per annum.
The state currently has three government medical colleges— MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, SCB Medical College, Cuttack and VSS Medical College, Burla. Besides the government colleges, there are three private medical colleges.
The All India Institute of Medical Science (AIMS) is setting up its unit in the capital city. At the meeting today, it was decided that a regional paramedical training centre would be set up at Bhubaneswar at an estimated cost of Rs 75 crore to impart training to para-medical staff.
Health department sources said many organisations have submitted their proposals to set up medical colleges in backward districts like Kalahandi, Keonjhar and Balangir.
Of these, the Sahyog Health Care and Research Foundation (SHRF) has already inked an MoU with the state government to set up a multi-specialty medical college and hospital. The hospital-cum-college, at an estimated cost of Rs 210 crore, would be ready by 2012.
Orissa health minister Prasanna Acharya said: “The state government would encourage establishment of more and more medical colleges and hospital in the public-private partnership (PPP) mode. A proposal has been sent to Centre for establishment of one medical college and hospital in PPP mode at Koraput.” The state government has granted a no objection certificate to Hi-Tech Hospital authority to establish one medical college in Rourkela.
Decks have been cleared for the setting up of another medical college in Balangir.
Western Orissa Development Council (WODC) will fund the project.

Vedanta Science College to start at Kalahandi

Vedanta is going to open a science college at Lanjigarh in Kalahandi to spread higher education among tribals. The Vedanta Science College will commence classes from the academic year 2011-12.
The company has identified five acres of land at Lanjigarh for the purpose. The architectural design of the college has been completed and construction activity will begin soon. The bhoomi puja for construction of the building was performed last month.
“The science college will fill the gap of quality science education in western Odisha. Besides education, it will also improve the human development index and leadership quality among youth,” said Prof Gopabandhu Behera, retired Professor of Chemistry of the Sambalpur University.
Most towns in interior western Odisha mostly have arts and commerce colleges, where job opportunities for students passing out are limited. The proposed college is expected to address the need for quality science education in the district of Kalahandi and will make the youth qualified enough to get ample job opportunities.
The first batch of students will be admitted on merit basis, with preference to local students. In the first batch, the college will enroll 64 students. “Vedanta Science College will integrate teaching, learning, and research for a holistic development of the students,” said President and Chief Operating Officer of Vedanta Aluminium Ltd, Lanjigarh Dr Mukesh Kumar.
The college will impart graduate level studies in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Zoology, Botany and Environment Science. The college will be managed by the DAV College Trust and Management Society, which is a premier education society and has already set up more than 100 colleges across the country. With the latest infrastructure, the college will provide facilities for sports, games and cultural facilities.
In Lanjigarh, the DAV College Trust and Management Society has set up an international school jointly with VAL which is giving access to quality English medium education to tribal students from Lanjigarh and around.
Establish the proposed Vedanta University in western Orissa

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) to set up medical and engineering colleges in Orissa

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) will set up a medical college and an engineering college in the State as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. Informing about the proposed institutes, Energy Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak said the State Government has lauded the CSR proposal of NTPC. The location for the colleges are yet to be identified and talks are on, the Minister informed.

National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC), India’s largest power generation utility, has sought 15 acres of land from the Orissa government to set up a medical college. The company also intends to set up a power engineering institute in the state.
The locations and other specifics of these two institutes are yet to be finalized.
“NTPC has sought 15 acres of land for setting up a medical college in the state. It has also evinced interest in setting up a power engineering institute. The company has written to us, requesting for land allotment and we will hold an inter-departmental meeting soon to decide on the site for the medical college and the power engineering institute. The details of the medical college are yet to be finalized but as per the norms of Medical Council of India, they have to start with a 300-bed facility”, an official source told Business Standard.
NTPC which had proposed to set up two super thermal power plants to be set up at Gajamara in Dhenkanal district and Darlipalli in Sundergarh district and also add 1320 Mw to its thermal power station at Talcher, was keen to sign a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the state owned Grid Corporation of Orissa (Gridco).
The PPA was to be signed between NTPC and Gridco for a period of 25 years. NTPC is setting up a 3200 Mw power plant at Gajamara and 4800 Mw power plant at Darlipalli.
One of the conditions set by the state government for signing of the PPA was the setting up of a medical college and a power engineering institute. The second condition was allocation of 50 per cent power for the state from the two proposed super thermal power stations.”NTPC has claimed that it has got the approval of the Centre for allocation of 50 per cent of power for the host state. We have asked the company to produce a copy of the letter of approval of the Centre”, the source added.
The proposed super thermal power projects of NTPC at Gajamara and Darlipalli were scheduled to be operational by 2016-17. The Gajamara project needed 2900 acres of land and NTPC claimed to have conducted the gram sabha for this project in March this year.
This is a good initiative by NTPC. The Orissa govt. must ask other industries to establish medical and engineering colleges in the industrial zones of western Orissa. In particular, such industry sponsered institutes need to be established in Sambalpur-Jharsuguda and Rourkela-Sudergarh belt.
Vedanta Aluminum Limited (VAL) to establish a science college at Lanjigarh

The Lanjigarh block in Kalahandi district, which has been neglected in almost all aspects of development till now, is soon going to have its first science college. In a move aimed at fulfilling the long cherished goal of the residents of the block and its adjoining areas of Ambadola, Muniguda and Biswanathpur Vedanta Aluminum Limited (VAL) has partnered with the DAV College Trust and Management society to start a Science College here, which will begin its operation from the 2011-12 academic year.
The college will start with undergraduate courses in physics, chemistry, mathematics, zoology, botany and environment science. It will be funded by the Lanjigarh Project Area Development Foundation (LPADF) — the special purpose vehicle formed for as per the advice of the Supreme Court.
Notably, there is no such college within the radius of 50 km of Lanjigarh and the students from the poorer sections here had to discontinue their studies after Class XII.
VAL COO and LPADF Director Mukesh Kumar pointed out that the college would be of great help to the students of the area who drop out of the education system due to lack of facilities for higher studies. The quality of education in the college will be ensured by the DAV College Trust and Management Society, which will manage the college.
Noteworthy, the society is a premier education society in the country, which has already set up more than hundred such colleges across India and is currently running a school, which is considered the most modern school in the entire district.
