Interview with filmmaker Sabyasachi Mohapatra
Having won accolades for films like ‘Bhukha’ and ‘Jai Jagannatha’, Odia filmmaker Sabyasachi Mohapatra is back with ‘Salabudha’, another movie with a rural background that focuses on the plight of the elderly in western Odisha villages. The director speaks about the selection of his latest movie for the Indian Panorama bouquet of International Film Festival of India 2013 and more in a conversation with Minati Singha
Q: How did you feel when ‘Salabudha’ was selected for Indian Panorama bouquet to be screened at International Film Festival of India-2013 (IFFI) on November 23?
A: I consider it a big achievement. The selection indicates that it is one of the best films made in India this year and I am very happy about it. Of course while making the film, I never thought of any award or recognition, but I make all my films with utmost sincerity.
Q: What is so special about ‘Salabudha’?
A: ‘Salabudha’ is special because it is based on a short story written by my father Kapileswar Mohapatra. I made it a full film after conducting a thorough research. The film is set in a 100-year-old village of Odisha.
Q: What message do you want to give the society through the film?
A: the film’s message is to be positive. Despite all odds, never lose hope and faith in the Almighty. If you strongly believe that the bad time will go away, then it will. The same happens with my protagonist, Salabudha.
Q: What are the new projects you are working on now?
A: I am now working on the sequel of ‘Salabudha’. The film is named as ‘Adima Bichara’ is also based on a short story by my father.
Q: What is your view on present trend of Odia film industry?
A: Frankly speaking, I am not happy with the new Odia films. Even the audience is fed up with the remake culture. I am hopeful that the trend will change soon.
Q: What suggestion would you like to give to young directors?
A: I would say, let them make good films with all their sincerity and seriousness. Filmmaking is not like fast food that you put it in the machine and the cooked food will come out. Make it your passion and not an overnight profit making venture.
