Following is a report from expressbuzz.com:

Though  a team of Medical Council of India (MCI) is scheduled to visit VSS Medical College at Burla next month to take stock of the things, the shortcomings pointed out by it during an earlier visit are yet to be addressed.

Earlier, MCI recommended to the Central Government to roll back the intake capacity to 107 students from 150 citing shortcomings. Later political intervention and public outcry forced the State Government to take up the matter with the Central Government.

Although the intake capacity was retained at 150 and the State Government assured the MCI to address the shortcomings, there is no material change on the ground.

The MCI during its visit in June had pointed out that four professor posts, 14  associate professor posts, 18 posts of assistant professor, 25 tutor posts, two posts of lecturer, one post of pharmacist, 20 posts of senior resident doctor, 13  junior resident doctor posts besides the post of superintendent, 11 laboratory technician posts, 18 posts of laboratory assistant, five laboratory attendant posts are lying vacant.

Moreover, it also pointed out to the absence of outreach teaching programmes, accommodation for boys, antenatal and immunisation services, labour room, bowl sterilizer, glove inspection machine, instrument washing machine and central laundry facility. The team also found out that there were only nine beds in the casualty against the prescribed 20 and 11 operation theatre tables were not conforming to standards.

Although the State Government effected some transfers from other medical colleges, which had surplus doctors, some joined while many others went back. As of now, three professor posts, 19 associate professor posts, 42 posts of assistant professor, six posts of senior resident doctor and 51 tutor/demonstrator posts are lying vacant.

The situation is no better on the bio-medical equipment and the auto- analyser fronts. Still many an equipment awaits installation and the Regional Diagnostic Centre is yet to operate round-the-clock.

Similarly, no step has been initiated on outreach teaching programmes, accommodation for boys, labour room, bowl sterilizer, glove inspection machine, instrument washing machine, central laundry facility and replacement of the operation theatre tables.

This despite promises made by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Health and Family Welfare Minister Prasanna Acharya to set things right during their visit to the medical on its Golden Jubilee celebration recently .
