Balangir villagers favour Lower Suktel

Ananga Udaya Singh Deo is hopeful that his legendary father’s wishes will be soon fulfilled.

Minister Planning and Coordination, who visited the villages to be affected by the massive irrigation project Lower suktel is upbeat about it.

Rajendra Narayan Singh Deo planned for it in early 60’s and his son AU and grand son Kalikesh Singh Deo, MP is now batting for the project.

Both AU and Kalikesh visited the affected villages here on 9 December to convince the villagers to allow the project to take off.

Suresh Chandra Mohapatra, Secretary Department of Water Resources (DOWR) accompanied the Minister and also visited the affected villages.

Mr.Mohapatra convinced the villagers to favour the project in view of larger interest.

Lower Suktel will change the scenario in Balangir district, which is a perennially drought prone area.

DOWR has presented Rs.1041 crore revised estimate for Lower Suktel to Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR), which has sent it to Central Water commission (CWC).

CWC is the technical clearance wing of MOWR.

Recently Mr.Singh Deo held discussion with the Minister Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal regarding the project.

Mr.Singh Deo also met U N Panjir, Secretary MOWR to give the approval for including it in AIBP.

During the visit to the villages, people raised various objections and apprehensions.

Mr.Mohapatra, Secretary DOWR cleared all the doubts among the villagers.

They were happy to learn the benefits of Lower Suktel for Balangir district, said Kalikesh Singh Deo.

Planning Commission has been approached for the massive project, which will benefit the barren district in turning into a green zone, said the MP from Balangir.

Mr. Singh Deo will be talking to Montek Singh Ahuwalia, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission in this regard soon, said sources.
