The following report is from The Pioneer:

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday promised that autonomy for VSS Medical College Hospital was under the active consideration of the Government. Patnaik said this during the golden jubilee celebration of this college supposed to be the premier health institute for whole of western Odisha and parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

However, the staff and students got sure that there would be no fund crunch for this college since the Chief Minister himself promised for a ‘blank cheque’ for the development of the college and the hospital. On the eve of the golden jubilee celebration, the CM almost promised for everything that was in demand.

“My Government is committed for the healthcare of the people. To make VSS Medical College a renowned institute in the line of all other developed ones of the country, all infrastructures will be provided to the college. This can fulfill our expectations,” Patnaik said adding that since its inception in 1959 the college grew strength by strength.

However, the Health Minister Prasanna Acharya, the son of the soil with more practical experience on day-to -day activities in the college and hospital was more practical.

“Only improved instruments or laboratories can’t solve the problem of any college. It is rather sincerity and a positive mindset that is need of the day,” Acharya said the doctors and students.

“Seals from many improved instruments purchased years back have not been opened in the four medical colleges of the State. At the same time many improved instruments remain unutilised intentionally,” Acharya said.

Speaking about the achievement of the present Government he said: “The era of inequality is going to be ended in all medial colleges. The same is also applicable for the state.” No discrepancy would be shown to VSS medical college, he confirmed.

Dr Janeth Khalkho, the Principal of the College presided over the meeting where Collector Pradipta Kumar Patnaik, superintendent of the college Dr GS Dash, former professors Dr Raseswari Panigrahi, Dr Minaketan Kar, Dr Sangram Sabat, president of JDA, Dr Sashikant Tripathy general secretary of students union were present.

The function will continue for five days, said Dr Uttam Pani. Prince Dance group of Brahmapur will be one of the attractions, he added.

During the visit of the Chief Minister in the aftermath of the suicide of the farmers, the police took preventive measures to curb any untoward situation. Preventive arrests were made, 20 BJP workers and MLA JN Mishra was also detained, the police said.
